Frequently asked questions

What's the NVQ process all about?

The NVQ process isn’t about exams or going ‘back to school’, it’s a confirmation that you’re already doing the job competently.

In a nutshell, you’re simply telling your assessor how you carry out your role and showing them the evidence (documents, photos, videos) that proves it.

Is there any written work involved?

No, all of our Controlling Lifting Operations NVQs are assessed through ‘professional discussion’ with your assessor.

This assessment method involves no written work or classroom-based elements.

What sort of evidence is required?

Evidence will vary depending on the specific qualification and level, but (as a guideline) examples of evidence required for controlling lifting operations NVQs could include (but is not limited to):

  • Tool box talk
  • Lift plan
  • Daily/weekly checklist
  • Daily brief
  • Drawings
  • Method statement
  • Risk assessment
  • Inspection report
  • Traffic plan
  • Lifting capacity charts
  • Minutes of meetings
  • Videos
  • Photographs

Evidence submitted can be related to various different projects (past or current) provided that it under 5 years old.

Who will be my assessor?

All of our assessors for these qualifications are experienced lifting professionals who have ‘done the job’ themselves and are therefore in a position to add real value to your qualification.

How long does it typically take?

CADUK offer a unique one-day assessment for these qualifications.

The whole assessment is conducted and captured electronically through audio and video recordings which drastically reduces the duration compares with the traditional ‘paper and pen’ NVQ assessments.

In order for the assessment to take place in a single day you will be expected to thoroughly prepare beforehand and have all evidence ready to be presented on the day.

Do I need to have the Red CPCS/NPORS card first?

Yes, you will be expected to have passed the appropriate CPCS or NPORS course, be in possession of the Red ‘trained operator’ CPCS/NPORS card, and to have at least 6 months of proven experience in your occupation before undertaking any of these NVQs.

Prior to enrolment (as part of our initial profiling process) our assessors will speak to each candidate directly to ensure that they have the knowledge, experience, confidence, and evidence to be successful on the NVQ.

Only after the assessor has approved you to start, can you be enrolled onto the qualification.

When can I apply for my CPCS/NPORS card?

Usually within 2 days of the assessment being completed we will send you an electronic confirmation (by email) that proves that you have passed the NVQ.

This electronic confirmation can be used to apply for the Blue CPCS/NPORS card right away, without having to wait for the certificate to arrive by post.

Can I fail an NVQ?

Technically Yes, you can fail any NVQ. NVQs are competence-based qualifications, they are a recognition of the skills, knowledge and experience that you already have. With that in mind, if you have never ‘done the job’ and don’t have the evidence to prove it, how are you going to answer the question?

We at CADUK have robust procedures in place to ensure that doesn’t happen.

The key to our success in this area is that we only enrol candidates onto our qualifications in the first place that we know have the skills, knowledge and experience to be successful.

We carry out a thorough profiling process (free of charge) with each and every candidate before enrolment to make 100% sure that the qualification is achievable before you start.

As part of this process one of our assessors will contact you directly to confirm that you have the skills, knowledge and experience required to be successful.

Once our assessor has ‘approved’ you to start, you can enrol at any time.

These NVQs are CITB Grant claimable

CADUK are a CITB Approved Training Organisation (ATO). This enables CITB registered companies to claim back £600 on completion of this qualification through the Short Period Qualification Grants scheme. To check if your company is eligible to claim please call CITB on 0344 994 4455.

Why should I complete an NVQ?

These qualifications in Controlling Lifting Operations are aimed at individuals that already hold the Red (trained operator) CPCS or NPORS card and need to upgrade to the Blue (competent operator) CPCS/NPORS card.

These NVQs help you make progress in your career, increase your employability and earning potential.
