Enhance your Construction Degree with an NVQ 6 or 7 – COVID 19

There are a great deal of experienced managers in the construction industry who have achieved high level academic qualifications in construction management such as HNC, HND, Degrees that are dismissing the idea of undertaking an NVQ 6 or 7 because they feel that their academic achievements have far more value.

Many argue that it took over 3 years to achieve their academic qualifications, paid an extortionate amount of money, burnt the midnight oil, attended workshops and lectures and undertook rigorous exams in the pursuit of academic excellence.

This may well be true, but to ignore the benefits of undertaking a competence based assessment qualification (NVQ) when you have access to one (at level 6 or 7) could be counterproductive in terms of professional development and access to work opportunities. This is particularly prevalent in the construction industry where competence based qualifications are actually viewed by many as having more value than academic qualifications. Academic qualifications such as degrees are an opportunity to enter an industry, and whilst the achievement of such a qualification is absolutely commendable – an individual could achieve a degree having never actually set foot on a construction site.

You cannot (for example) access a Black CSCS card with an academic qualification (i.e a degree). The Black CSCS card is linked to a Level 6 or 7 NVQ which demonstrates occupational competence and confirms the skills, knowledge and experience of an individual that has been gained over time in a real-world construction environment. Those that have achieved a HNC, HND or degree are however eligible to apply for the White AQP (Academically Qualified Persons) CSCS card.

Likewise we also believe that those construction managers that first achieved academic qualifications and have then gone on to gain real on-site experience should also grasp the opportunity to be recognised for their competence. Competence based assessment qualifications complement academic qualifications and actually enhance the individual’s workplace opportunities.

CADUK are specialists in the delivery of the Level 6 & 7 NVQs in Construction Management and are regularly asked by prospective learners for our advice and guidance as to the next steps in terms of their professional development. All of our Assessors and Internal Verifiers at levels 6 & 7 are Members or Fellows of The Chartered institute of Building (CIOB).

If you have a high level academic qualification and want to explore the benefits of competence based assessments, please send us an enquiry on our website www.caduk.co.uk or give us a call us on (01952) 287366 and we will help you identify the right NVQ for you.

NVQ for Construction Managers

Construction Supervisors/Managers “You don’t know what you know” COVID 19

Most Construction Supervisors/Managers without formal qualifications like NVQs have no idea how much they know, and even worse, they don’t know the value of what they know. They are worried that:

Everyone I work with knows it already…
What I do is just common sense…
Lots of people know a lot more than me…
It’s pretty easy, most of the time I do it without thinking about it…

This often leads to them not reaching their full potential whilst more inexperienced people with university degrees and not as much workplace experience end up with more successful careers.

In simple terms in order to be able to VALUE what you do, you have to get what you know out of your head. You need to reflect on your own practice and get into a professional discussion to present other types of evidence to back your responses. Whatever you do; you have to get it out there and share it with other Construction Professionals who are in a position to appreciate and measure what you have achieved.

If you’re prepared to undertake some self reflective practice we at CADUK can ensure that you achieve much more than just the satisfaction of knowing what you know, we can help you achieve the Gold and Black CSCS cards and if we feel that you are capable of achieving the Level 7 in Construction Senior Management achieve Membership of the Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB), .

Let us help you.

Unlike some training providers we will never enrol you on a qualification unless we are 100% sure that you have the required skills, knowledge and experience to be successful.

60,000 Industry Accreditation cards need updating to Gold/Black cards.

Some 60,000 Industry Accreditation cards, also known as Grandfather Rights cards, allowed workers to obtain CSCS cards on the strength of an employers’ recommendation rather than the achievement of a recognised qualification.

From 1st January 2020, all cards renewed under Industry Accreditation will expire on 31st December 2024 and CSCS will stop issuing the card from 30thJune 2024.

Some people will find that they need to move on to Gold (supervisory) and Black (managerial) cards and CADUK can provide you with access, call 01952 287366 for more information.

Become an NVQ Assessor with CADUK

Become a (MCIOB) NVQ Assessor in Construction Management? In a COVID environment.

According to a recent article in Construction Manager magazine, a fifth of all vacancies in the construction industry remain hard to fill because employers cannot find staff with the right skills, qualifications or experience – and at senior construction management the situation only gets worse.

Over the years CADUK have qualified hundreds of learners Managerial NVQs at Level 7. Most Level 7s have continued their professional development by becoming Members/Fellows of The Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB)

Some of our learners enjoyed the assessment process so much that they went on to become CADUK NVQ assessors themselves. They wanted to give something back to the industry and to help other construction professionals just like them to develop themselves and their careers.

This is where the (MCIOB) NVQ assessor comes in, he’s been through the process himself, he understands that it’s essentially one qualified construction professional determining whether or not their candidate is also a competent construction professional and enabling them to achieve the formal recognition that they deserve.

Becoming an (MCIOB) NVQ assessor is more simple than you might think even in this COVID environment.  A realistic time-frame to become and assessor is 6-8 weeks. CADUK train our own assessors in-house. Initially there is one day of theory/learning which we carry out on TEAMS, followed by a live assessment of one of the candidates going through the professional discussion and an observation of performance.

The cost to become a qualified (MCIOB) NVQ assessor is ZERO all you have to do is bring 3 Level 7 candidates (paying) with you.

If you’re interested in becoming an (MCIOB) NVQ assessor (and perhaps joining the CADUK assessment team, please give us call 01952 287 366.

“CADUK Provided me with the facility and support I needed to get the correct qualification to further my career.

After a brief discussion with Gary, he gave me the belief that I would be able to complete the Level 7 NVQ in Construction Senior Management. Once I started the course it took me 6 months to complete, based on 2 evening sessions per week and a morning at weekends. It could be done quicker but I was able to allocate the times that suited my life and my work without having a detrimental effect on either.

My assessor was David and I cannot speak highly enough of him. I now have my Black CSCS card, have completed my Professional review and await approval for MCIOB status”

Shaun Bull

“My experience with CADUK has been brilliant, I received great support and guidance throughout the learning process and constructive feedback on the assessments. A very Professional organisation that I would highly recommend for any of your Construction skill competence and assessment needs!”

Nick provided support in the use of the easy to use online submission system and always offered prompt advice in the event of any technical issues. Last but not least John my assessor who provided positive, helpful feedback throughout the assessment process and challenged me to reflect on my experience and produce the best possible submissions.

Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS), what is all about? – COVID 19

Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS) is the leading skills certification scheme within the UK construction industry. CSCS cards provide proof that individuals working on construction sites have the required training and qualifications for the type of work they carry out.

A common misconception from those who are seeking to work in the construction industry is whether or not CSCS is a legal requirement. To work on a construction site there is currently no legal obligation to have a card before you work on site.

But the law requires that those participating in construction work must be competent, that is why Build UK have agreed that workers, supervisors and managers on their sites need to have a CSCS Card.

In fact, most job adverts looking for operatives, supervisors and managers in the construction sector, ask for applicants to already be in possession of a CSCS Card before they apply.

Having a CSCS Card may not be a legal requirement, but without one, you will find it difficult for employers to engage with you. In this COVID 19 days you can’t afford to be without one.

Ask for advice from CADUK on 0195228484, we will be ready to help you.
