Frequently asked questions
What happens after I apply?
Once the online application form (click the red button above) has been submitted, one of our NVQ assessors will contact you directly for a brief telephone discussion (there is no charge for this, and no obligation to go ahead with the NVQ).
The NVQ assessor needs to confirm that you have the experience and evidence required to achieve this NVQ.
We will only ever approve a candidate to enrol onto any of our NVQs if we are absolutely sure that they are capable of achievement.
When can I start?
Once one of our assessors has approved your application to enrol, you can start the process at any time.
There are no set start/end dates with an NVQ.
How is this qualification assessed?
This Level 7 NVQ is assessed though a discussion-based process.
There is no written work, no classroom-based elements, and the whole assessment can be achieved remotely (without the assessor coming to site) through our unique assessment process.
First, you will need to upload your evidence (workplace documents) to our ePortfolio portal. Once your assessor has accepted your evidence, you will move onto the discussion stage.
The discussions will be carried out remotely via Zoom. During these Zoom sessions you will ‘share screens’ with your assessor so that you can both look at your evidence at the same time.
You will then have a separate discussion for each of the units (9-10 in total depending on which units you choose).
This discussion is a two-way natural conversation between two construction professionals. It’s not a question-and-answer session, and you’re not trying to give the assessor ‘the right answer that you think they want to hear’. You’re simply telling them about your experiences, your process, your projects and your documents.
What sort of evidence is required for this qualification?
Evidence for this Level 7 NVQ will depend on the units that you select, but examples of evidence that will be required include (but not limited to):
- Project risk register
- Programme of works
- Construction phase plan
- Company training matrix
- Various minutes of meetings
- Various emails
- Project brief
- Client specification
- Quality report
- Construction appraisal
- Building control consent
- Progress report
- Non-conformance report
- Workforce plan
- Project deviation report
- Project budget
- RFI’s
- Personal development plan
- Construction appraisal
- Health and Safety policy
- Corrective action plan
- Value engineering report
- Sub-contractor database
- Technical drawings/drawing register
Evidence submitted can be related to various different projects provided that it is less than 3 years old and it is linked to you (i.e. you’re named on the document or can otherwise demonstrate how the document is linked to you).
Who will be my assessor?
All of our Level 7 assessors are Members or Fellows of the Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB).
They are experienced, qualified, construction professionals who have ‘done the job’ themselves (and in some cases, still are).
Many of our assessors have worked in senior construction management positions for Tier 1 companies including Macegroup and Laing O’Rourke.
We carefully select a particular assessor for each learner to ensure that your work experiences are aligned and that the feedback and guidance provided is useful, relevant and rewarding.
Your assessor will provide advice and feedback on request via phone, email, Teams/Zoom and through our ePortfolio system.
Once the Level 7 NVQ has been achieved, your assessor and our centre staff will continue to provide advice and guidance (free of charge) throughout your application for Membership of The Chartered Institute of Building (MCIOB) *CIOB Application/Membership fees will apply (click here to see CIOB’s fees).
What is the duration of this qualification?
Achievement of this Level 7 NVQ is largely down to the learner’s own motivation.
We provide support for a period of 12 months from the date of registration, however this qualification is realistically achievable within 1-3 months.
How does the MCIOB application work?
This Level 7 NVQ provides fast-track access to MCIOB through the ‘Shortened Review’ process.
Please note that in order to take advantage of this shortened (fast-track) route, your NVQ assessor must be a Member or Fellow of The CIOB themselves (all of CADUK’s Level 7 assessors are).
On completion of the NVQ Level 7 you can apply for MCIOB. You only need to complete a short application form focusing on your ethics and professional judgement.
Your NVQ assessor will help you every step of the way with this process free of charge.
Once your MCIOB application has been successful you will be eligible to use the following post-nominal letters after your name:
John Smith MCIOB
When can I apply for my Black CSCS card?
Once enrolled/registered onto this qualification you will be eligible to apply for the Red ‘TSM’ Experienced Technical, Supervisor or Manager CSCS card right away (this is optional, but useful for those that need a CSCS card urgently to get on site).
The ‘TSM’ card is issued on a temporary basis and demonstrates that you are working towards your NVQ.
Once the NVQ has been completed, we’ll send you a scanned copy of your certificate which you can use to apply for your Black ‘Manager’ CSCS Card.
Please note: To apply for any CSCS card you are required to have passed the appropriate level of CITB Health, safety and environment (HS&E) test within the last two years.
More information about this can be found here.
Can I fail this NVQ?
Technically Yes, you can fail any NVQ. NVQs are competence-based qualifications, they are a recognition of the skills, knowledge and experience that you already have.
With that in mind, if you have never ‘done the job’ and/or don’t have the evidence to prove it, how are you going to answer the question?
This is exactly why it’s so important to make sure that the NVQ is achievable before you start.
The key to CADUK’s success in this area is that we only enrol candidates onto our qualifications in the first place if we know that they have the skills, knowledge and experience to be successful.
We carry out a thorough profiling process (free of charge) with each and every candidate before enrolment to make 100% sure that the qualification is achievable.
