NVQ for Construction Managers

Construction Managers “Its amazing what you know”

Construction Managers without a National Vocational Qualification 6 or 7 have no idea about the value of what they know. They think that,

Everyone I work with knows it already
What I do is just common sense
Lots of people know a lot more than me
It’s pretty easy, most of the time I do it without thinking about it

This often leads to them not realising their full potential.

In order to be able to VALUE what you do, you have to get what you know out of your head. You need to reflect on your own practice and get into a discussion to present other types of workplace evidence to back up your responses. Whatever you do, you have to get it out there and share it with other Construction Professionals who are in a position to appreciate and measure what you have achieved.

All of our Assessor’s and Internal Verifies are MCIOB so you will be helped and supported by someone who knows what they are doing.

If you’re prepared to do that we at CADUK can ensure that you achieve much more than just the satisfaction of knowing what you know, we can help you achieve NVQ that leads to the Black CSCS cards and then you can start to realise your true potential.

Let us help you.

We will never enrol you on a qualification unless we are sure that you have the required skills, knowledge and experience to be successful.

How do Planners, Estimators, Buyers & Quantity Surveyors access the Black CSCS card?

There are a number of Planners, Quantity Surveyors, Estimators and Buyers in the construction industry that are unaware that high level competence-based qualifications (NVQs) are available for their specific occupation. They’re all aware that academic qualifications exist such as HNC’s, HND’s, Degrees etc and many of them actually hold these qualifications, but is it enough?

The Pearson Level 6 NVQ in Construction Contracting Operations Management is a bachelor degree level qualification that has 5 distinct pathways tailored specifically for Planners, Estimators, Quantity Surveyors, Buyers and General Contractors.

Competence based qualifications (NVQs) are actually viewed by many in the construction industry as having more value than academic qualifications. Academic qualifications such as degrees are an opportunity to enter an industry and whilst the achievement of such a qualification is recommended, an individual can achieve a construction-related degree having never actually experienced a live construction site.

Most hold the White Academically Qualified Person (AQP) CSCS card to prove that they know the theory, but they also want the competence-based qualification and the Black CSCS card to back it up.

The NVQ 6 in Construction Contracting Operations which leads to the Black CSCS card is comparable to a Bachelors Degree and confirms the skills, knowledge and experience of an individual that has been gained over time in a real construction environment.

CADUK are specialists in the delivery of this qualification and most of our Assessors and Internal Verifiers at levels 6 are Members or Fellows of The Chartered institute of Building (CIOB).

If you would like to explore the benefits of competence-based qualifications, please give us a call us on (01952) 287 366.

Don’t forget, we aren’t teaching you how to become a Ganger, you’re proving to us that you’re already doing it competently and safely.
Our process can now be assessed totally online, from distance via Zoom and telecom.

Candidates will need to do some preparation beforehand by gathering the required evidence in the form of site photographs, videos, and documentation (this will include things like RAMS, Programme, Toolbox Talk, Induction, Labour and Plant Allocation Sheet, Daily Diary, Permits to Work, Near Miss Report etc)

Once our assessor has approved this evidence, the 8 units of the qualification be be completed through discussion via Zoom.

This online process not only enables the qualification be completed very quickly, it also enables Gangers all over the UK to access this qualification regardless of their location.

Do I need to already have qualifications in the occupation that I’m supervising?

No, it is expected that Gangers will already have completed a Level 2 NVQ and hold the Blue CSCS card in their specialist trade/occupation in order to enrol onto this Level 3 qualification, but is not essential.

How much does the qualification cost?

The qualification costs £950 + VAT. This includes registration fees etc.

How can I apply for this?

NVQ 6 in Senior Site Inspection for Quality Managers

According to a recent survey by the CIOB more than three-quarters of construction professionals believe the industry’s current management of quality is inadequate. Based on the findings from the call for evidence and wider research, Paul Nash, past-president of the CIOB and chair of the commission is recommending a number of measures, one of which is to develop a competency-based quality qualification/certification.

CADUK are specialists in Managerial NVQs and have identified the most relevant qualification for those responsible for monitoring project quality and managing project progress and handover in construction.

The Pearson Edexcel Level 6 NVQ Diploma in Senior Site Inspection is not only accessible to Site Inspectors/Building Quality Officers/Clerk of Works who monitor the work of companies that carry out contracts for their employer or client. It is also accessible to those individuals who typically work for both Main Contractors and Sub Contractors who liaise closely with the client team to ensure a quality product. In some companies this is a stand alone function, however typically this role is undertaken as a duel function by more experienced site/construction managers. Although employed by the contractor, these quality managers are really carrying out the work of the old Clerk of Works, without arguably the same level of impartiality.

This qualification is broadly comparable to Bachelors Degree in Construction Management and demonstrates that that you carry out your job function to an industry standard. Other benefits would include access to Membership of The Institute of Clerks of Works and Construction Inspectorate (ICWCI), Black CSCS Card and Membership of the Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB) through the full professional review.

CADUK have seen a noticeable increase in applicants for the Level 6 Senior Site Inspection qualification particularly from Scotland, largely because the Scottish government is considering making it mandatory to employ a clerk of works on all public sector jobs, a requirement that would have a massive impact on site inspection arrangements north of the border and could well have ramifications for the south too.

So if you are a person responsible for monitoring project quality and managing project progress and handover in construction) or even if you are a directly employed by an employer/client as a Clerk of works, take a look at the Pearson Edexcel Level 6 NVQ Diploma in Senior Site Inspection.

Alternatively to discuss this, or any of our qualifications in more detail, give us a call on 01952 287366.

Can existing Construction Managers close the “Construction Skills Gap?

According to a recent article in Construction Manager magazine about a fifth of all vacancies in the construction industry remain hard to fill because employers cannot find staff with the right skills, qualifications or experience.

From our experience at CADUK delivering Construction Managerial NVQs we believe that the real problem is not necessarily a lack of skills and experience of the construction manager, it is the lack of a measurable proof of these skills in the form of a competence based qualification (NVQ). This often precludes them from certain employment opportunities because employers and recruitment agencies cannot engage with them as they cannot meet the clients minimum requirements for qualifications (NVQs), industry accreditation (CSCS) and professional status (CIOB, ICWCI, IOSH).

Many construction managers with no formal qualifications have no idea how much they know, and even worse, they don’t know the value of what they know. Our most popular qualifications are at Level 6 and 7 (comparable to bachelor and Master Degree Qualifications), most people who eventually enrol and successfully achieve these qualifications are initially hesitant to engage because it does seem that their confidence has taken a battering over the years because of a variety of reasons.

In simple terms in order to gain these high level qualifications and gain access to these employment opportunities individuals need to start to VALUE what they do, they have to get what they know out of their head. They need to present types of work evidence to meet certain criteria and verbalise their answers professionally to a workplace competent assessor to accurately reflect on their own practice. They need to share what they know with with other Construction professionals who are in a position to appreciate and measure what they have achieved. What is there to worry about.

Let us help you.

If you are prepared to undertake some self reflective practice, we at CADUK can ensure that you gain access to these employment opportunities by helping you match your skills and experience to the right qualifications which will provide access to Black CSCS Cards and professional status with the CIOB, ICWCI, IOSH etc

We will never enrol you on a qualification unless we are 100% sure that you have the required skills, knowledge and experience to achieve it and we will provide you with assessors who are amongst the most experienced and qualified in the construction industry.
