The Hidden Benefits and Value of NVQ Qualifications

Most individuals and employers in the Construction Industry are aware of the immediate benefits of achieving NVQs at every level i.e. access to CSCS & CPCS cards, access to professional status with CIOB, IOSH & access to increased workplace opportunities.

Unfortunately due to the way some training providers conduct the assessment process (particularly at Supervisory & Managerial levels) many individuals and employers get short changed and never get to realise the hidden advantages of actually EARNING their qualification.

It is important to remember that some of these NVQS are at Levels 6 & 7 and are comparable to Bachelor/Master Degrees. In our opinion it is impossible for any individual to take any meaningful credit from a qualification that has essentially been done for them.

Experienced people can gain so much by actually going on a journey of self reflective practice and empowering themselves with knowledge by taking ownership of the qualification and then being judged and challenged honestly and professionally by an industry expert.

Our learners have provided us with the following feedback because we have asked them to take ownership of the assessment process:

  • I now have a much clearer understanding of my responsibilities within my chosen area of expertise.
  • The qualification provided me with an opportunity to develop new skills and knowledge and to bring fresh ideas to the workplace.
  • The qualification allowed me to become more focused on how to develop my career which led to instant career progression.
  • The qualification helped give me the confidence to stand up for myself and others in a fair and consistent manner.
  • The qualification helped give me the confidence to say no when asked to take on unnecessary and inappropriate work or obligations.
  • The qualification helped give me the confidence to yes because in more and more situations I am no longer in fear of failure.

So when selecting an NVQ provider to undertake a qualification, please consider whether you are getting real value for your money, not just in terms of the immediate benefits but also the hidden benefits which actually turn out to be just as beneficial in the long term.

Enhance your Construction Degree with an NVQ 6 or 7 – COVID 19

There are a great deal of experienced managers in the construction industry who have achieved high level academic qualifications in construction management such as HNC, HND, Degrees that are dismissing the idea of undertaking an NVQ 6 or 7 because they feel that their academic achievements have far more value.

Many argue that it took over 3 years to achieve their academic qualifications, paid an extortionate amount of money, burnt the midnight oil, attended workshops and lectures and undertook rigorous exams in the pursuit of academic excellence.

This may well be true, but to ignore the benefits of undertaking a competence based assessment qualification (NVQ) when you have access to one (at level 6 or 7) could be counterproductive in terms of professional development and access to work opportunities. This is particularly prevalent in the construction industry where competence based qualifications are actually viewed by many as having more value than academic qualifications. Academic qualifications such as degrees are an opportunity to enter an industry, and whilst the achievement of such a qualification is absolutely commendable – an individual could achieve a degree having never actually set foot on a construction site.

You cannot (for example) access a Black CSCS card with an academic qualification (i.e a degree). The Black CSCS card is linked to a Level 6 or 7 NVQ which demonstrates occupational competence and confirms the skills, knowledge and experience of an individual that has been gained over time in a real-world construction environment. Those that have achieved a HNC, HND or degree are however eligible to apply for the White AQP (Academically Qualified Persons) CSCS card.

Likewise we also believe that those construction managers that first achieved academic qualifications and have then gone on to gain real on-site experience should also grasp the opportunity to be recognised for their competence. Competence based assessment qualifications complement academic qualifications and actually enhance the individual’s workplace opportunities.

CADUK are specialists in the delivery of the Level 6 & 7 NVQs in Construction Management and are regularly asked by prospective learners for our advice and guidance as to the next steps in terms of their professional development. All of our Assessors and Internal Verifiers at levels 6 & 7 are Members or Fellows of The Chartered institute of Building (CIOB).

If you have a high level academic qualification and want to explore the benefits of competence based assessments, please send us an enquiry on our website or give us a call us on (01952) 287366 and we will help you identify the right NVQ for you.

This post is aimed at anyone that has achieved high level academic qualifications in construction and carries out management functions i.e. Experienced Quantity Surveyors, Planners, Estimators, Design Managers, Site Engineers, Construction Managers, Project Managers, Commercial Managers, Contract Managers, Property Developers, Facility/Estate Managers etc.

NVQ for Construction Managers

Construction Supervisors/Managers “You don’t know what you know” COVID 19

Most Construction Supervisors/Managers without formal qualifications like NVQs have no idea how much they know, and even worse, they don’t know the value of what they know. They are worried that:

Everyone I work with knows it already…
What I do is just common sense…
Lots of people know a lot more than me…
It’s pretty easy, most of the time I do it without thinking about it…

This often leads to them not reaching their full potential whilst more inexperienced people with university degrees and not as much workplace experience end up with more successful careers.

In simple terms in order to be able to VALUE what you do, you have to get what you know out of your head. You need to reflect on your own practice and get into a professional discussion to present other types of evidence to back your responses. Whatever you do; you have to get it out there and share it with other Construction Professionals who are in a position to appreciate and measure what you have achieved.

If you’re prepared to undertake some self reflective practice we at CADUK can ensure that you achieve much more than just the satisfaction of knowing what you know, we can help you achieve the Gold and Black CSCS cards and if we feel that you are capable of achieving the Level 7 in Construction Senior Management achieve Membership of the Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB), .

Let us help you.

Unlike some training providers we will never enrol you on a qualification unless we are 100% sure that you have the required skills, knowledge and experience to be successful.

For more information, just give us a call on (01952) 287 366 don’t get left behind.

With significant cuts to the numbers of military posts in recent years, there are large numbers of active (coming towards the end of their service career) and ex-service personnel now looking to enter the job market or increase their existing employment opportunities. In the UK, current projections suggest that over 20,000 individuals leave the armed forces every year.

CADUK have access to MOD NVQ funding for armed forces personnel

CADUK have identified that there are some significant barriers for serving and ex-service personnel in entering the Construction Industry at Supervisory & Managerial level, not least of which that at the point of leaving they do not posses the appropriate qualifications (NVQs), industry accreditation (Gold &  Black CSCS cards) or professional recognition (CIOB/ICWCI).

Alternatively those Ex-Service people who have managed to gain employment in the construction industry and are in a supervisory or managerial role can still access ELCAS funding up to ten years after they leave to help fund the NVQ qualifications that can further enhance their employment opportunities.

We have a number candidates who have made a successful transition.

How do Planners, Estimators, Buyers & Quantity Surveyors access the Black CSCS card?

There are a number of Planners, Buyers, Quantity Surveyors and Estimators in the construction industry that are unaware that high level competence-based qualifications (NVQs) are available for their specific occupation. They’re all aware that academic qualifications exist such as HNC’s HND’s Degrees etc and many of them actually hold these qualifications, but is it enough?

The Pearson Level 6 NVQ in Construction Contracting Operations Management is a bachelor degree level qualification that has 5 distinct pathways tailored specifically for Planners, Estimators, Quantity Surveyors, Buyers and General Contractors.

Competence based qualifications (NVQs) are actually viewed by many in the construction industry as having more value than academic qualifications. Academic qualifications such as degrees are an opportunity to enter an industry and whilst the achievement of such a qualification is recommended, an individual can achieve a construction-related degree having never actually experienced a live construction site.

Most hold the White Academically Qualified Person (AQP) CSCS card to prove that they know the theory, but they also wanted the competence-based qualification and the Black CSCS card to back it up.

The Black CSCS card is linked to a Bachelors Degree Level 6 which confirms the skills, knowledge and experience of an individual that has been gained over time in a real construction environment.

CADUK are specialists in the delivery of this qualification and most of our Assessors and Internal Verifiers at levels 6 are Members or Fellows of The Chartered institute of Building (CIOB).

If you would like to explore the benefits of competence-based qualifications, please give us a call us on (01952) 287 366.
